I don’t know if it was a lack of return on investment or the increased operation costs that resulted in LEGO dropping support for buying through LDD and whilst technically still supporting it they stopped adding new pieces.

In order to avoid frustration of not being able to buy something from LEGO, using software produced by LEGO designed to allow you to buy the model, meant either restricting the parts library to those they had plans to keep producing long term or stocking massive amounts of bricks to ensure they could service requests. Lego does not have every part it’s ever made for sale, some pieces or specific colours for a piece will go out of production, so if you build a model then a couple of months later submit it to LEGO there was no guarantee that your model was still viable. So buying through it never really made economic sense. Prices were kind of ridiculous, reconstructing a genuine LEGO model in LDD and uploading it would result in a much higher price tag than buying the original model. But they have long since given up on that idea. Originally LDD was part of LEGO’s attempt to tap into the MOC (My Own Creation) market – you could design the model then it would produce instructions and automatically buy all the pieces from LEGO. Over the years I’ve used it for a few things including designing a LEGO model of our house. After a bit of research I ended up installing Lego Digital Designer (LDD) – it lets you build virtual LEGO models fairly easily.

When my wife first got excited about the modular range, I looked into how hard it would be to design one myself.
